What did you do this Labor Day?

by Brad Isaac on September 5, 2005

Over the weekend, my family and I went up to the mountains to relax. It is very nice to get away from it all. We will normally take a few hikes through the woods, cook out and get a lot of rest and relaxation staring off into the horizon. This weekend was no different except we stayed a lot closer to the house. Normally, we’d drive up to Stone Mountain and hike up to the grand waterfall, but this time we felt a guilty about using gasoline for the 45 min. drive (1 way). Well, no big loss. We still got in the excercise and scenery. :)

There were plenty of deer and rabbits to observe every day. In fact, both my dogs (Italian greyhound and yorkie) got away from us and chased a deer well into the woods. They must have run a couple miles, because when my IG came back she was panting quite hard. The IG breed are minature runners so I rarely see her pant. But this time, she was dead tired.

My kids were able to catch a few lizards and butterflies and one big box turtle. We have a house rule that all animals caught need to be released by nightfall. We were on vacation so I let it slide by a day, but I am glad they have such an attachment to nature.

So what did you do on your labor day? Hope it was good.
