Goals As Road Maps
Posted under Achieve-IT!A quote from Les Brown seemed to hit home today. He said, “goals are road maps that guide you and show you what is possible for your life.”
I am in server training this week and I cannot help but think back about the mid 90s when I set the goal of being MCSE certified. At that time, the MCSE was one of the crown jewel certificates for IT professionals. It still is to an extent, but back then it carried much more clout. There was almost a mystery surrounding how people achieved that goal.
Having this as a goal required a specific “roadmap” that included a whole lot of study, research and money for classes and labs. Virtually all computers I came into contact with became potential network “nodes”. I kept a stack of index cards in my pocket with notes and questions set up as “flash cards” where I would test myself in nearly every spare moment. I would be in line at the bank or in the post office running through my notes and I would sometimes get questioning from nearby people. “What he you studying for?” When I replied “my MCSE” that would often lead to quizzical looks of “what is that?”
Back then, the MCSE consisted of six technical exams that you had to pass in order to achieve the final certification. Each exam along the way awarded you with a new certification. Those exams became the landmarks on my roadmap. It’s funny, the more progress I made in my roadmap, the easier things became. Concepts tended to repeat themselves. There seemed to be overlap in many places I had not expected and before I knew it, I it made it to the end.
It’s funny about these roadmaps though, as soon as you follow your roadmap to its final destination, you tend to pick up another roadmap when you get there.
