Do you take enough breaks?

by Brad Isaac on November 14, 2005

Taking breaks during my workday is very difficult for me. On the one hand I might be tired. But on the other, I have so much to do, I will not take a break because I feel like I’ll miss something.

I guess I’m afraid I won’t be able to get back on track if I take a ten minute break to get away from the computer and/or phone. But I sort of feel like a kid who doesn’t want to go to bed on time because he’s afraid he’ll miss something.

However, on the days when I do take a break or breaks, I end up more productive overall. It’s sort of counter-intuitive the way stuff like that works huh?

So do you take breaks? If so, how many breaks do you take each day and for how long?

I have to use a program called Break Reminder to remind me to take breaks, otherwise, I will constantly continue to work, without any breaks for about 4 hour periods. This is not good, as I have started enduring pains in my wrists, and backs.

Now that I have this program, I take the breaks every 50 minutes of work for 5-10 minutes, depending on how busy I am. And yes, it definitely improves the productivity considerably.

This program used to be freeware, but, I think they have started charging for it now. Here is the URL for Break Reminder for anyone interested:
