The Right Actions Lead to the Right Emotions

Posted under Motivation

Do you ever have one of those years where the Christmas spirit never really makes it to you? The past few days I have been feeling that way. Maybe it is because we have been unseasonably warm in North Carolina. Even yesterday it was 60 °. Maybe it is because my woodworking has carried over a month or so longer than it normally does and I do not want it to end.

But more likely the reason I wasn’t anticipating Christmas is I wasn’t really doing anything. I have been busy lately and I simply did not feel like hanging Christmas lights. I didn’t feel like helping my wife and kids decorate. So in a way not feeling like decorating or participating in the events of the season, I was getting exactly what I was aiming for. I got what I put in to the situation - nothing.

I decided today I would do a few things to see if I could boost my spirit a bit.

The first thing I did was simple. I put on some Christmas music. Then I set out to decorate my office in Christmas lights. I had been thinking for weeks that I probably would not put up the lights this year.

This afternoon I went to a party, had some good food, good conversation and drank some eggnog.

So the simple act of doing did seem to help.
