A “Whisper” from the Universe?

by Brad Isaac on January 6, 2006

I had a somewhat eye-opening experience earlier this morning where one of my dogs (the yorkie) came into the bedroom as I was getting dressed. I looked down at her and smiled and said “Hi Sophie” to her. She politely lied down and rolled over to show submission to me. This was not accidental. I had trained her since she was a puppy to do that using Cesar Millan’s “Dog Whisperer”training method.

As I rubbed her belly, I started wondering..”What ever happened to Cesar? Is his show still on? Is he making a good living? I sure hope so. Because he’s made my life with my dogs so much more relaxed and enjoyable.

I soon went into the other room to make some coffee. I turned on the TV news and who is on front and center but Cesar Millan! I reactively yelled out “I was just thinking about that guy 2 minutes ago!! I was wondering what happened to him and suddenly here he is on the news!”

Cesar has a new book out and he was on the news to talk about it.

Every now and again we all experience “meaninful coincidence”. These coincidences can be minor, or somewhat shocking as they make their appearance. I am by no means an expert on the sort of unworldly experience of meaningful coincidence or Synchronicity as psychiatrist Carl Jung referred to it. But I do consider these incidences as road signs. Signs that tell me I am on the right track..I am progressing in the way the world wants me to.

Here’s what Wikipedia has to say on the subject of Synchronicity:

A well-known example of synchronicity involves plum pudding. It is the true story of the French writer Émile Deschamps who in 1805 is treated to some plum pudding by the stranger Monsieur de Fontgibu. Ten years later, he encounters plum pudding on the menu of a Paris restaurant, and wants to order some, but the waiter tells him the last dish has already been served to another customer, who turns out to be M. de Fontgibu. Many years later in 1832 Émile Deschamps is at a diner, and is once again offered plum pudding. He recalls the earlier incident and tells his friends that only M. de Fontgibu is missing to make the setting complete, and in the same instant the now senile M. de Fontgibu enters the room by mistake.

Study

A recent study within the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research Lab has suggested that there is a small though statistically measurable link between human thought and patterns that occur in random data sets. There is no evidence as to whether this is caused by individuals unintentionally recognizing complex patterns and then moulding their thoughts towards an unconsciously known result or the thoughts of the individual are themselves affecting the random patterns in a manner of individuation. This study’s results have not been replicated, and its methodologies are disputed.

I was just thinking about synchronicity! – Ok not really but one of my new years resolutions is to pay more attention to strange coincidences.

Here is a synchronicity story from my past.

In 1996 I attended a meditation workshop hosted by a man who had studied native american spirituality and meditation. The workshop was interesting and gave me some interesting ideas that helped me out with relaxation and meditating.

Jump forward three years, I’m sitting in a college writing course and for some reason the workshop instructor’s image pops into my head. I recall some of the things he said during the workshop and think to myself “I wonder what he’s up to now” and I try to remember his name. His name escaped me and I filed it away in the back of my head.

After class I’m leaving the building and I see an older gentleman walking the same direction (away from the building) as me about 30 feet in front of me. He stops, for no obvious reason, turns, and waits for me to approach before striking up a conversation with me.

He started with basic small talk, how are you, fine day, blah blah. Then he says “My name is Jon O’Brien, I work in the library and if you need anything let me know.”

Then it hit me – THIS was the guy who taught the meditation workshop. It was a little weird for me so I decided to ask if he taught a meditation workshop at the university a few years before. Sure enough, he did so I told him that I was just trying to remember his name during class. He laughed and said something like “when the student is ready, the teacher appears. I’m not sure which one of us is the student, but here’s my card.”

I went home, told my roommate and other friends about it and everyone thought I was full of baloney. I was busy with a full class load, work and social engagements so I didn’t get a chance to contact Mr. O’Brien. About six to twelve months later I found out he had passed away of a heart attack.

Brian,

Interesting story :) It’s wild the way it can happen. Too bad he passed away before you could speak to him.
