When I recently migrated my blog from Blogger (hosted on my own server) to Serendipity, I discovered that my host was caching the .htaccess file for anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. Any time I made a change, I would have to wait for the cache to refresh before my new settings took affect. This could be why your .htaccess redirects were not working (it was for me). Don't know if I helped but I wish you the best of luck figuring out your problem. By the way, I love the new site design. John I don’t know if this would help at all but it might.
