The Trick to Creating Effective and Motivating Voice Notes

Posted under Goals and Goal Setting, Motivation

Do you carry a Pocket PC, Palm, iPod with voice recording features or digital recorder so you can capture your ideas while you are on the move?  I do and I love it!  My Pocket PC allows me to get my ideas no matter where I am.

Here’s a trick to getting the most out of your voice notes.  It’s sort of a spin off of David Allen’s Getting Things Done technique of labeling your next action.  The benefit of using this simple extra step is that you won’t have to think on the back end “now what action was I supposed to attach to this note?”

Lets take mowing the lawn as an example.  If you simply had “mow the lawn” as your voice note, where does that begin?  Do you just walk out into the yard and start mowing?  No, first you probably grab the lawn mower, then fill it with gas, start it then you mow.  When you just have “mow the lawn” as your objective, it’s easier to put off because there’s unfinished business on the front end that you know is there but you don’t see it when it’s time to do the work.

What you do is when you hit the record button on your device, first start your note with the first action step.  Then continue your voice note.   If you need to mow the lawn, your action voice note might be “Action step: pull lawn mower out of garage, mow lawn.”  That way, you have your first easy step and don’t have to let the whole task overwhelm you.

Overall, the key to effective time and action management is finding your starting point and get rolling from there.  Dorthy started at the first yellow brick as she went to visit the wizard.  You can do it too if you quickly think through your first step as you are recording your voice notes.
