I agree with all of these. Also, if you do other things that scare you (letting spiders crawl on you, bungee jumping, etc), you'll decrease your response to adrenaline, and feel much calmer in the face of things that frighten you. Of course, public speaking practice itself is much better than just having a spider inject venom :)

Hi,

Great points about the myths. Why would anyone think that picturing the audience in their underware would make you less nervous!?!?!?!?!?

I liked most of your points for improving your speech, but must disagree with 1 - telling a joke. I believe that jokes are a waste of everyones time and make ht espeaker look like a boob. Use himour, but donlt use jokes!

The reason for not using jokes is that someone will be offended. Even if it is a clean joke, if someone does not understand it, and hte rest of hte audience is laughing, they will be offended as they will feel stupid. And if you start offneding your audience from the very begining................you will have nothing to do at the end!

Cheers

Lucy, good additions :) Yes, I agree, just about anyone can do this. With enough practice you get better and better.

Thanks Brad, I agree wholeheartedly with all 9 strategies. As a past president of a Toastmasters chapter, I'd like to offer a couple more. Study your potential audience. To whom are you speaking? Do you like them? You'd better, if you want to truly connect with them. I do make eye contact, and move my gaze freely through the audience. I watch them to see what their response is. And adjust my talk to fit the response. Just like in a conversation. They may not be speaking back to me out loud, but there is a response that can be seen and felt. If you become good at this, you develop what can be called a natural rapport with your audience.

Personally, I love hearing a speaker who seems to be speaking just to me. The rest of the room recedes and its just me and the speaker. That is magic. And the real magic is, that anyone can do this. I promise.

@Blog Bloke, I am sure your political experience served you well for public speaking. The advantage of a job like that is you get so much practice. And practice does make perfect.

@Andrew. You're right I forgot to mention practice. So # 9 on the list is practice. Get out there and do some speeches - reminds me of a funny scene in the movie Punchline where Tom Hanks is doing stand up in front of a bus stop.

Great list. Can't recommend enough the importance of proper breathing before (and at the beginning) of a presentation ... and the myths are certainly just that ;)

Brad,

You are right on the money placing preparation as number one. When you really know your material well and have carefully planned out the best sequence to present it, much of your fear will fade.

The rest of the problems will center around controlling your physical reactions to being in an unusual position - standing in front of a bunch of people who are staring at you. An excellent strategy for dealing with that is to start giving as many presentations as you can now. Give toasts at parties and small presentations at meetings. Join Toastmasters. Just don't let the 'big presentation' be the first time you stand up in front of a group to talk. Practice in less tense situations.
